Question: How do I configure my TED for solar/wind/generator?

Answer: View our official TED5000 multiple MTU installation and setup video: http://www.theenergydetective.com/support/installation

To measure solar production, consumption, and net-metering, you’ll need at least two MTUs with your TED—one for measuring your main panel (your usage) and one for measuring the wires from your inverter (your generation). If you have more than one main panel then you’ll need one MTU per main panel, and if your solar feeds into more than one breaker then you’ll need one MTU for each (double-pole) breaker.

For more information about how your TED should be setup/installed, you need to determine how your solar power is fed into your home:

If your solar power is connected to your main panel through a breaker in that panel, then follow the steps in scenario A.
If your solar power is connected directly to the power feed between your meter and the main panel, then follow the steps in scenario B.

Scenario A

-Connect all CTs with the red dots facing away from the breaker panel.
-Using the System Settings Wizard in footprints, label the MTU located in your main panel as “MTU 1” in footprints.
-On the System Layout tab of the System Settings Wizard in footprints, select ‘yes’ for the option to “Would you like to modify the MTU configuration?”. Then set MTU 1 (in your main panel) to ADJUSTED LOAD and MTU 2 (on your solar) to GENERATION.
-Generated power is displayed on TED as a NEGATIVE number.

More information about how the TED calculates your solar production, usage, and net-metering:
When you have TED installed as explained in scenario A, the MTUs are actually measuring your true generation and your true net-metering, since the power you’re generating may occasionally travel back to your utility. The TED software is designed to take these two measurements and calculate your true usage. When looking at your Footprints dashboard, the “NET/MTU1/MTU2” buttons in the upper left quadrant display each reading as follows:

NET—Net-metering total  (What MTU 1 is actually measuring.)
MTU 1—usage total (House load based on calculations of the NET+Generation.)
MTU 2—generation total

Scenario B

-Connect all CTs with the red dots facing away from the breaker panel.
-Using the System Settings Wizard in footprints, label the MTU located in your main panel as “MTU 1” in footprints.
-On the System Layout tab of the System Settings Wizard in footprints, select ‘yes’ for the option to “Would you like to modify the MTU configuration?”. Then set MTU 1 (in your main panel) to LOAD and MTU 2 (on your solar) to GENERATION.
-Generated power is displayed on TED as a NEGATIVE number.

More information about how the TED calculates your solar production, usage, and net-metering:
When you have TED installed as explained in scenario B, the MTUs are actually measuring your true generation and your true usage. The TED software is designed to take these two measurements and calculate your true net-metering. When looking at your Footprints dashboard, the “NET/MTU1/MTU2” buttons in the upper left quadrant display each reading as follows:

NET—Net-metering total  (Calculation based on Load + Generation.)
MTU 1—usage total  (Actual House load.)
MTU 2—generation total

Scenario C

This configuration is for customers who have loads "downstream" from where the generation feeds into the system.
Then set MTU 1 (in your main panel) to ADJUSTED LOAD and MTU 2 (on your solar) to STAND ALONE NET.
-Generated power is displayed on TED as a NEGATIVE number.

More information about how the TED calculates your solar production, usage, and net-metering:
When you have TED installed as explained in scenario B, the MTUs are actually measuring your true generation and your true usage. In this configuration, the generation and the load will be view separately, and the software will not add them together.  NET and MTU1 will be equal.

NET —Net-metering total  (What MTU 1 is actually measuring.)
MTU 1— Net-metering total  (What MTU 1 is actually measuring.)
